The best choice – the Tower Hill Floor Sanding Specialists!
The entrance leads to the Tower Tunnel under the Thames – the second to be attempted. The first was by Marc Brunel: a man somewhat overshadowed by his famous son but also a notable engineer and visionary.
Brunel’s tunnel was opened in 1843, having taken an amazing fifteen years to dig. A great achievement for the time, but its cost of £60000 made it an economic failure. It now carries the East London tube line. Almost thirty years later, James Greathead, a young South African engineer, claimed his new tunnelling device could create a subway in under a year.
He certainly delivered: at a rate of four and a half feet a day, the work was completed in ten months – for a mere £10,000! This subway remained in vogue until Tower Bridge was built in 1894. Fourteen people were carried in a kind of carriage pulled by steel cables.
Perhaps not surprisingly, many couldn’t be bothered and simply walked through it – though small stature was essential and high heels and hats definitely out… Sir Josiah and his son are in Roman costume: one lying on a shelf while the father on his pedestal has angels blowing trumpets above his head.
Pitfalls (and more) of poor floor sanding
Really bad floor sanding, sealing and finishing is clear to see, including debris under the finish, a really uneven surface or signs of wear that appear too quickly. However, poor workmanship is not always that obvious.
When you move in to a home or workplace with a sanded and restored floor, it could be that on first glance all seems well. You decide to concentrate on other aspects of the property, unaware that the real problem is just beneath you. Or, possibly you have commissioned floor sanding, or hired in equipment yourself, and you are now debating whether the standard is good enough.
↦ Long-term effects of badly sanded floors
Also look at the colour of the floor finish. If it appears natural and clear then it should also be good quality and durable. If it looks “orange”, discoloured or mottled you may have a problem.
It is possible to leave “drum marks” on wooden floors too if belt sanders are not used correctly. These might not show up until it is varnished, and leaves behind an unattractive feature on your floor.
↦ How to test the quality of floor sanding?
A professionally sanded and varnished floor should be smooth and glossy, with no ridges or bumps. One of the best ways to test this is to pass a household mop across and see if it glides effortlessly across the surface.
↦ How to rectify for floor sanding mistakes?
The good news is that a professional floor sanding firm can carry out both partial restoration work or a complete rescue in many cases.
Their equipment and skills means powerful machines take away the top layers of the floor, without damaging the integrity of the wood. It can then be sealed and treated for the ultimate smooth finish and durability.
